"My love of nature and the outdoors began as a child
exploring the woods near my home. Spending most of
my childhood immersed in the natural world instilled in
me a sense of awe and respect for my surroundings.
Working with wood provides an opportunity to
incorporate my love for the natural world into my
artwork, to use material born from the earth to create
pieces meant to showcase the beauty of Nature in all
its wondrous forms, as well as to bring attention to the
fragility of the world we share and the need for
balance and conservation.
Wood is a natural and renewable resource, however
we must recognize that careful management is
necessary to maintain balance within the forest
ecosystem. I work only with responsibly harvested
Michigan hardwoods and my books are filled with
eco-paper purchased from a company who powers
their operation with renewable wind energy and
offsets their outbound shipping with carbon credits.
These papers are Forest Stewardship Council
Certified, are made using renewable Green-e certified
energy and are comprised of least 30% post
consumer waste."
Michigan native Lori Taylor grew up among
Clarkston’s pines and
ponds which inspired her lifelong passion for the
natural world, and is now the focus of her mixed
media art.
Inspired also by story and illustration, Taylor’s art
reflects her interest in everything from illuminated
manuscripts and ancient petroglyphs to richly
illustrated children’s fairy tales.
Taylor’s storytelling art educates as well as
entertains in her commissioned educational
exhibits and murals.
“Layers like falling leaves, like moments
overlapping, life happening--
I create the story as it reveals itself to me by
working in mixed media. For me it is like working
with a foot in two worlds at once: it is a blend of
word and art, painting and drawing, abstract and
realism, myth and natural history. Stories are what
connect us and I create my art as a way to
preserve and celebrate Nature’s story.”
Taylor was selected as an Artist-in-Residence in
2007 for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Park and in 2008 for the Porcupine Mountains
Wilderness State Park.
Artist and photographer Marie Rust has been
developing her artistic style and her passion for the
natural world for over 25 years. Raised on the
shores of Whitmore Lake, she
learned at an early age the spirit
of Nature and her many moods.
"The lake really brought me close
to the rawness of the natural world.
It is a constantly changing
environment, stormy or calm,
white-caps or ice
sheets, fog, the glare of the sun.It
changes every hour, every minute,
as the sun moves, winds shift,
rains come and go.
Growing up on the lake I learned
how to observe the natural world
and felt a closeness to it that
I don't believe I would ever have
felt in a city or suburb.
"There is a simplicity in the lives of wild animals, a
simplicity we left behind ages ago. Yet I believe we
all crave it from time to time. It's why we go to the
park, or the lake, why we camp and hike and give
money to orgainizations who pledge to protect what
is left of our wilderness."
Marie has applied the skill of observation and her
belief in the simplicity of life to her work, which is
highly detailed, finely crafted and very direct. "I
want people to feel the energy of my subjects, to
feel a connection, the same connection I feel to
Nature and her wildness."
